I'm reading a book right now about a journalist who was in Washington D.C. in the 1820s to 1850s. It's talking about religious revivals that were actually started by politicians trying to consolidate power away from the Federalists, and the schemes that they came up with to get the public heated up with religious fervor and hatred toward people who weren't like them, and creating that environment for political ends. It's talking about someone's murder right now, as part of the "Anti-Mason" movement.
