The eyewall filled in recently and the temperature in there rose. Higher winds just above the surface and lower pressure as well. This could be at the category 4/5 line at landfall. Wouldn't be surprised to see a death toll over 1,000, sadly. Haiti's already in horrible shape and can't handle weaker storms, let alone this.
And they'll arrest Haitians coming across the border into DR. There's no escape from Haiti for most people.
Ugh. Didn't the DR fight a war to get away from Haiti? I can understand why, but damn, and not like the DR is a G20 country either. Pretty dirt poor there too. So hard. I read Pedro Martinez' autobiography, and he has like one pic from his childhood (he's from the DR). He said his family and no one he knew had a camera, and this was in the 1970s.
The hate is bad enough that people of Haitian descent aren't allowed to get Dominican citizenship in most cases. And yeah, DR is very poor, but someone from Haiti would probably view it as a huge improvement. It's just a sad situation all around.

Considering the earthquake didn't tend to do much for the world to wake up, I really doubt Matthew will. It's heartbreaking.
