  1. Why risk exposure to different types of people and cultures? That's crazy! All the best people are right here where I grew up and I ain't fixin' to meet no others.

    1. Nobody dreams about growing up and moving to St Louis, and it's a rust belt city in every respect. I lived there for eight years and found there was a lot to like about it: rolling hills, cheap nice old houses surrounded by big trees. When you arrive, people are outgoing and welcoming, but it's hard to make friends because everybody spends every Sunday afternoon at Grandma's house. The ones who've stayed are fiercely loyal, can't quit talking about high school (which defines your social standing), and love to trade stories about friends who left and "can't wait to move back."

          1. Oh, wow, so it isn’t even what you did in high school, it’s where you went to high school. Quite the “class” based society they have there.>

  2. Several of my friends grew up here. Some never left, others did and came back. It's a town in limbo, not dead yet, but the best future scenario will be as a bedroom community for the next town north, 15 miles away. It's pretty redneck and Republican, too.

Also, I really want that cat.
