  1. There’s another precedent, too. In 1836, Martin Van Buren and his running mate, Richard Johnson, scored a resounding victory over their Whig opponents. But Johnson, a Kentucky congressman who owed his nomination to strong backing from the popular, outgoing incumbent, Andrew Jackson, proved an unusual and controversial choice. He angered evangelical voters when he opposed stopping the delivery of mail on Sundays, on grounds that doing so would favor one religion above others. More shocking still, Johnson, who never married, made no effort to conceal his long-term relationship with Julia Chinn, a “mulatto” woman whom he had inherited from his slave-owning father. The couple had children together, and Johnson insisted that they be treated no differently from free white children.

Somehow we think our times are whackier than previous ones.

          1. IKR, they are an insidious cancer that has been embedded in the political DNA of this country since the get go. And for the last 30+ years they have manifest through the GOP.

          2. Late in replying to this, but…As much as I like to kid, my sister is a christian fundamentalist, and I remain simultaneously fascinated and frustrated by a lot of religious types in this country. My motto is “whatever floats your boat, as long as it doesn’t sink anybody else’s”, and I’m always trying to figure the religious right out. Me? I think I’m congenitally opposed to associating with any large group, or to authority for authority’s sake. It might not be (or just be) that I care about my fellow man, I just like rooting for the underdog, which, for most of human history, has been most of humanity.>

          1. HAHA excellent!

I wanted to put one of those banners on my roof for Cheney, as he had the habit of thundering low over my house in that window rattling Sikorsky Marine 2, on his way from DC to his luxurious waterfront armed compound several creeks over. I settled for running outside, yelling and raised fingers, because being detained by the SS would be Boring.

          2. There was a thing somewhere on the web today saying that the Obama administration has created 15 million jobs. I may have that number wrong but I think that is what it was. Such a difference from the goon squad that came before him.

          3. I used to refer to it as "The Tourettes Administration" for the effect the media had on me in those days. The MUTE button and numerous Nerf balls got heavy usage.

  2. Two things:

    1. People are already voting. You can't invalidate their votes ("disenfranchise them") by changing the ticket after they voted.
    2. Most state laws don't allow ballots to be changed this close to the election.

"The media and establishment want me out of the race so badly – I WILL NEVER DROP OUT OF THE RACE, WILL NEVER LET MY SUPPORTERS DOWN!"

    Yes!

    1. I am confused by the level of denial involved. Trump made it through the primaries and this far and now they collectively balk. If this most recent comment had become public long ago his supporters would have shrugged it off.

      1. I think half his supporters were of the "hold their nose" variety, and less and less of those can. The MRA types? They love him!

    1. Speaking of Johnson, the running mate in that Politico story would have a very unfortunate name, if he were running today.

  3. On Twitter:

"That's it, that's the last straw," they said, surrounded by billions of straws

    1. This flame-out of Trump's, I hope it gets called Trumpgazi. Either that or Pussygate, but this is a family blog, so I"m going with Trumpgazi.
