If anyone ever feels the call to do a deep dive into the psyche of Trumpian types, I highly recommend |Male Fantasies|, which is not an article from Maxim, but rather a scary-as-shit, sobering, academic exploration of the psychological underpinnings of the Freikorps – the former Great War soldiers in Weimar Germany, who eventually became the leaders of Hitler's SS. It was written in the 1970s, and was the author's doctoral dissertation, his field was German literature. He's German, so it's not exactly light reading.
He read the diaries, letters and novels (yes novels, they wrote many novels) of as many Freikorps men that he could find. He extensively documents unconscious patterns in the writings which are, to say the least, chilling. The book will totally change the way you see things as simple as soldiers marching in formation, and it paints a very useful frame for understanding any far-right types, American, European, past or present.
Even reading the reviews on Amazon is worthwhile. And the book's introduction, by Barbara Ehrenreich is an amazing, inspiring message of how to live one's political life in the face of people wanting to remake the world in a fascist image.
From an Amazon review: "Through repetitive conditioning and a brutal pedagogy, these negative, shadowy perceptions are then projected outward onto the despised classes of society and made to represent the chaotic forces of the collective cultural unconscious." It does sound rather Trumpian!
I try to be a difficult-book-reading nerd, but I'm not sure I want to turn over that rock.
A little secret I learned in my relatively brief time in the military: marching is actually kind of fun, in the way one imagines square dancing would be.
