I was talking today with the father of the guy I work for. He's my age and a retired lawyer as is his wife, They are progressives and they flew to Denver right before the election to help with voter suppression efforts. He told me that in a criminal rape trial the defense attorney wants more women on the jury than men as they tend to think the victim must have done something to encourage the act. Either she dressed inappropriately or she didn't fight back enough. He said that all the attorney had to do was to play up to those preconceived ideas and his client was likely to be found not guilty.
Two great friends, a lady my age in Austin, and a lady 10 years older than me who moved to Portland, both didn't vote this time, the first time in both of their lives that they didn't. Both of them didn't like Hillary. Madeline Albright said there was a special place in Hell for women who wouldn't vote for another woman but a lot of women aren't bothered by that idea.
I hear so much in the media about women supposedly being expected to vote for Hillary just because she's female. I think they are conflating that with the fact that most women who are voting for her are happy to vote for her because she's very qualified and there was the huge added bonus of voting for such a qualified candidate for the first female president.
And I wonder how many women don't like Hillary because she stayed with Bill? Or who may be upset that she's made so much money giving speeches even though that's such a common thing for politicians?
Women don't care about that. Women understand why she'd stay with him. And women don't care about the speeches. If they did it would be women making the outcry about that, not Trump.
It's more subtle and subconscious. Women internalize misogyny because it keeps them safe. At least in our society. Women are trained from toddler-hood to always put the emotional comfort of any men around them ahead of their own emotional comfort. Men are conditioned to expect it. That explains making sammiches, letting men interrupt, being "nice," seeing the humanity in rapists but not in their victims, everything in society, on a grand scale and a personal scale. We can't have the menfolk feeling uncomfortable or they may get scary. It's so taboo that it's only being talked about in the public dialog in the past few years, although there's tons of feminist literature that addresses it.
So when a women has a clear shot at the presidency? A whole lot of women start finding an excuse as to why they don't like her. it's unconscious but it's not surprising. There's no point in trying to get them to see it, either, because it's buried so deeply they'll never see it.
My dear CR- I have witnessed the knee jerk hatred of the Clintons- some in my own family, for over 20 years. I felt Hillary was qualified, and certainly not perfect- not the greatest campaigner either, but not bad. I had no trouble at all voting for her. Trump is unqualified and has demonstrated he will sink to any level. I thought she could win against Trump, but our countrymen proved us wrong.
I'm wondering if Hillz also proved that for the most part, a long career in Washington is not an asset in a presidential campaign, and the intertubes, like radio almost 100 years ago, is a transformative technology for this kind of stuff.
