  1. Hey does anyone know anything about plasma TVs? A neighbor of mine is selling one for $150, has no room for it, getting rid of stuff. It's a 50 inch. I have small TVs so this behemoth would be kinda cool and I figure I can't beat the price even if it craps out, plus it's only moving down the block, he has the orig box so I figure the likelihood of it torquing is minimal. Trouble is I really know nothing about TVs. Mine are pretty old.

fyi, I'd probably pay to have it wall-mounted on my fireplace – from what I hear plasmas are very heavy compared to LEDs, and I don't think setting on a table would be stable enough.

    1. not a fan of plasma TVs. They use a lot of 'lectricity compared to LED TVs. Find out how much power it draws before you buy such a beast.

    2. also plasma TVs eventually lose their picture clarity, as the plasma burns out the phosphors. Caveat emptor. How old is it? have you gotten a good look at how it behaves? tell me the make and model and I'd research it for you.

    3. I bought a plasma by mistake once. I decided to keep it, and mounted it on the wall in my bedroom. At first it was beyond dark, and I had to tweak the settings. I kinda miss those brightness knobs and such. Anyway, I like it as much as any of my others. If you do buy it, do NOT lay it flat to transport it. Good way to fry it.

      1. I figure for the price and since it's just down the street it won't kill me to take it unless there's some huge reason not to. I have two TVs, both are not much bigger than my computer screen, so for $150 I really can't buy even another one the size of my two, so might as well. He's been posting about it for a while now and no one's taken it. Everyone wanted his cool coffee table, though, lol. He's in Japan right now but he'll be home this weekend.

I actually hardly ever watch TV, maybe a few times a month I watch movies, so maybe not worth it, but it just seems like a deal. I know the guy, he wouldn't sell me a lemon. He's just never used this and now they need the space.

        1. I've blown more than a buck fiddy at happy hour before, and got nothing to show for it. I don't think you can get hurt.

Wish I hardly ever watched, but it's become my primary source of entertainment. Not much to do out in the sticks after dark.

    4. I have a 50" plasma I bought 7-8 years ago. It's technically obsolete compared to the new LCDs and LEDs, but it looks great. Plasma TV's are actually far superior to LCD/LED technology for movie watching, their blacks are blacker (insert Spinal Tap joke here) and their contrast is better, plus they don't suffer from motion artifacts- something that the new TVs are just catching up to eliminating with the 240hz refresh and better pixel resolution. Plasmas are much heavier, but not prohibitively so (hanging one on the wall requires a quality wall mount and you have to hit the studs). The new next greatest thing is OLED (organic LED) which look amazing, especially at 4kHz (and are thin and can be curved) but are expensive- especially compared to a $150 used Plasma. Unfortunately Plasma technology lost out in the format wars- it's much cheaper to make LCDs or LEDs.The other thing you give up with older TVs is Smart TV tech, especially WiFi Smart TV (my Plasma is Smart, but not Wifi, so I'd have to plug in an ethernet cable to use the Smart apps and/or update firmware). Don't buy a cheap or off brand LCD/LED, they don't necessarily look very good. Unless you're planning on dropping $600 minimum, you'll probably get a better deal buying the used Plasma- make sure that there are no burn in marks on the screen (plasmas have screen savers for that reason)

      1. Zip, I've heard good things about the contrast. What about power consumption?

I have a 42" LCD TV, 10 years old, that draws 100W. Will be interesting to see what comes out in the next few years. Maybe in the next year or two I get a 4k monitor for my computer…

        1. they're not nearly as efficient . I've been eyeballing the LG OLED as a replacement, maybe jump to 55" or 60". They're one of the best rated OLEDs of 2016, far better picture most competitors and wafer thin and light (very stingy on electricity too). I'm just having troubles justifying throwing nearly 2K at a damned TV, lol

          1. Yeah, a 5 foot tv seems a bit much for me, as does $2k, but I'm liking where oled is going. Next up, solar cells!

      1. Must've been intended for the "poor door" leading to low-income housing developers are required to include in their projects.

        Or, maybe the regular entrance.

    1. I never use the fireplace. Fires and candles freak me out. I get worried even about leaving the curling iron on (as I should.)
