  2. Columbus could be reasonable sure to find food, water and breathable air at his destination and didn't have to pack his own. The free reaction mass also helped.

  4. True, plus wind power was freely available, Sargasso Sea notwithstanding. The real limit on the length of voyages was how much food and fresh water the ships could carry.
