  1. Awesome. I knew that Internet petition I signed would do the trick.

    Next: Snowden.

    But seriously: Manning was subjected to all manner of torture and judicial abuse before he ever got a court martial. Kept naked and awake 24 hours a day in solitary confinement, that sort of thing. Whatever anyone thinks of what he did, he's surely been punished enough.

    1. But he didn't. He got a commutation, a reduction in sentence. Very different thing.

      I could talk about this until everyone is bored to death. I cared about this case a lot, gave money to Courage to Resist, an antiwar organization that was helping him, and then her. But let me just say one thing: the documents he gave to Wikileaks are still being used by MSM organizations to analyze all sorts of diplomatic and military matters around the world. How did an Army corporal get access to so much stuff? One of the tenets of safeguarding classified information is that, whatever the level of classification, the information should only be given to those who have a need to know. He had no such need. They—the war oligarchs, the Deep State—fucked up big time making such a giant trove of information available to a comparatively insignificant person who probably doesn't even have a super-PAC. He embarrassed them. They had to punish him, and they did. Obama's fixed it, some.

        1. Having just looked it up on W'pedia, I'm now an expert: pardons and commutations are both subsets of executive clemency. But if you're pardoned, it means you're totally innocent, like Cap Weinberger.

          So: C'mon down, Julian! You said you would!

  2. The quality of mercy is not strained;
    It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
    Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest;
    It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
    ‘T is mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
    The throned monarch better than his crown:
    His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
    The attribute to awe and majesty,
    Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
    But mercy is above this sceptred sway;
    It is enthronèd in the hearts of kings,
    It is an attribute to God himself;
    And earthly power doth then show likest God’s
    When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
    Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
    That, in the course of justice, none of us
    Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;

      1. Karen, I've mentioned to you before that due to one of the few flaws my parental units had (not openly supporting teh ghey), I didn't have as inclusive an attitude as I do now, nor until I was in my mid 20s have BFFs of all stripes. I have made sure to not have this flaw with Kid Glass, but damn, I don't think anyone in our family would act like that customer.

        I hope that woman gains enlightenment, as I strive for more enlightenment myself. Sigh.

          1. Customers are like any other group of homo sapiens– 10% you want to punch, 10% you want to hug, 80% you don't really notice either way.

          2. "Sapient" is kind of pushing things a bit, don't you think? And where does the portion I want to refer to the competition, mental health professionals and/or the police fit in?

          3. I will not have you bringing this negativity into the tournament!

            I guess the competition, mental health professionals and police all like donuts? Help me out here…
