  1. I watched an Aussie movie online last night called "The Dressmaker." It was charming. Kate Winslet and Liam Hemsworth and Judy Davies.

    1. Way back when Video rental stores were A Thing, there was one little shop in Hunt Valley that had – for whatever reason – a ton of offbeat Aussie independent films. One of the only ones that I remember is | Rikky and Pete |. Signature, driving-from-the-roof-of-the-car-type quirky. Funny also.

Oh yeah | The Dish | is pretty much a must see, if you haven't, too.

      1. I LOVE The Dish. They are the same team who made The Castle, although The Dish is my fav of those two.

Have you seen The Last Days of Chez Nous? it's charming. And a little sad.

I also really enjoy Quigley Down Under. Alan Rickman steals the whole movie, but the movie itself – the writing, the cinematography, it's all people with amazing film pedigrees and it shows. I don't know why that never did well.

Speaking of driving from the roof, I was driving down in LA last Saturday, on 101 fwy southbound through Cahuenga Pass, which transects the Hollywood Hills between the suburbs of Studio City and Hollywood, and there was a vintage race car next to me with an actual film camera mounted on a thingy behind the driver, looking down the road ahead of him. So it must have been filming purposely right there to get the car in frame with all the iconic scenery of that part of town. It was kinda cool, I couldn't look too much since I was driving.

        1. Oh cool, thanks. haven't seen either Last Days or Quigly (it's always been on my list, but somehow slipped…) Pretty sure I saw The Castle, though it's been a while – might have to re-visit it.

Wow, that looks like a great ride, lots of history all around there (I had to look it up!). Somebody was either doing a vanity shoot or we'll see that footage in the next Italian Job remake perhaps…

I saw a weird thing like that one time. I had just driven onto the span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (the other Scary Bay Bridge), headed from Nowhere to Norfolk, and here was a car in the right lane with its flashers on following van. They were slow and I was Traveling, so I accelerated past them. I saw then that the van's side door was wide open and there was some kind of boom sticking out with a full sized pro video camera fixed to the end. Some tech was sitting in on the floor next to it and it was pointed forwards to a hot little red Italian convertible with a couple in it.
they has to be making some kind of movie, but I've not seen it. I hope they edited me out when I passed them!

          1. I have seen pics of that bridge/tunnel before, just looked at it again, that would really unsettle me to drive across, I can't imagine a film crew doing it.

  2. Augh. Whatever kind of Weather Station they have on | Hamilton Island | must be damned near bulletproof. So far.

    Wind Speed 81 mph ()
    Max Wind Speed 118 mph
    Max Gust Speed 144 mph

They're about as close to the bull's eye as you can get. I really hope everyone in that area either was able to GTFO or is bunkered down above thee surge line. *shudder*
