  2. Made my own planes, a la James Krenov, for some years. Very satisfying. Mine were never as beautiful as his, but worked well until they got stolen. My current situation precludes more than handy-man level wood working, but I still love to see it done well.

  3. It's all in the sharpening and adjusting, and making sure the slot in the sole ahead of the iron is as narrow as possible. You know Japanese planes work "the other way"; you pull them toward you, and traditionally hold the work with your feet. On very important work, say the columns of a temple, the carpenter would sharpen the iron, adjust it, make one long pass—and then repeat that process for each stroke.
