2015: EpiPen Maker Sued (Home) State when Medicaid Un-Prefered It

  1. Big Pharma is a quasi criminal racket.
As an ER doc for almost 30 years I can tell you that Epi-Pen's are over hyped several orders of magnitude. I noticed a few years back they were pushing them into every school for every case of hives or bee stings. Then I noticed trolling in some of the medical literature. There was this inordinate push to use them for every allergic reaction that came to the ER. Accusing ER docs of not using epi pens enough — or insulting our specialty. I was very suspicious that these were industry sponsored "experts" who claim — falsely — that they see all the anaphylaxis. Really, it was nothing more than trolling.
I would say the need for epinephrine in allergic reactions is < 5%, and that's in the ER, where we have epinephrine not in pre-packaged, overpriced delivery system. Epi is an old, inexpensive, essential medication. The Epi-Pen delivery system is out of patent and they've cornered the market.
Fuck unfettered capitalism and profiteering on patients.
