I was in a street market in Kampong Cham, Cambodia, a few years back, and there was a block of stalls where everybody sold cell phones and accessories. Guys were cracking 'em open, soldering on 'em and every damn thing. Criminals!
The phone I grew up with was still in service after my mother died, some 30 years later. More modern push button phones, aside from their terrible tonal qualities, rarely make it 5 years. I've never had a cell phone last longer than 3 years. I'm going back to a CB radio.
You probably thought you own that iPhone; turns out you're just leasing it. You've heard of software as a service; this is just the next phase.
To hell with being environmentally conscious and fixing products that already exist–we've got more crap to sell!
