  1. Yeah, like it or not, Augustine did much to shape European politics and society for a long time . Maybe still [here in U.S.] I read [ oh , the horror , the hours ] and wrote about City of God in Collidge . It is about the sacking / fall of Rome , reasons thereof, and how to avoid such things. [ Guess what the answer is…] Anyway, maybe he didn't really mean it to be a political treatise, it became one anyway. The next giant of political philosophy after Plato. A coupla years later, Clovis, father of Charlemagne, converted to the Big-C. Not that any [well, few] of them were all lovey Christians, but they had a bunch of propaganda right at hand supplied by Augustine, if they needed it. Also, the political power of the pope.
