Recently I took a friend with only a high school degree to lunch. Insensitively, I led her into a gourmet sandwich shop. Suddenly I saw her face freeze up as she was confronted with sandwiches named “Padrino” and “Pomodoro” and ingredients like soppressata, capicollo and a striata baguette. I quickly asked her if she wanted to go somewhere else and she anxiously nodded yes and we ate Mexican.
There are plenty of class signifiers he just chose some stupid ones. But the big problem IMNSHO is he seems to think they are a bigger problem than lack of opportunity which is ridiculous.
Yeah, I'd like to see him stumble around some of the menus around here–cochinita pibil, Michoacán mariscos, Oaxacan Tlayuda. I must live in Hoity-Toityville with the abundance of unpronounceable foodstuffs!
What a turd.
Gee, wouldn't it be nice if David Brooks' party supported things like public housing in decent neighborhoods and school desegregation and funding for low-income areas. Oh, and killing those food deserts would go a long way toward introducing people to interesting ingredients for sandwiches and the like. And…
Over the past generation, members of the college-educated class have become amazingly good at making sure their children retain their privileged status
No Bobo, you're talking about upper middle class REPUBLICANS
Upper-middle-class moms have the means and the maternity leaves to breast-feed their babies at much higher rates than high school-educated moms, and for much longer periods
Remind me again Bobo, which party has been fighting for paid maternity leave and which party has fought tooth and nail against it?
Upper-middle-class parents have the means to spend two to three times more time with their preschool children than less affluent parents
And which party has pushed for expanded daycare and which one is against it? Which party is for increasing earning power for the poor so that both parents don't have to work 40 hours a week to make ends meet and abandon their children? Which party opposes any sorts of minimum wage increases or any other efforts to level the playing field economically?
Which party has pushed for equal educational opportunities while the other one pushes for gimmicks like school vouchers to further erect those educational barriers you claim to lament? Which party is hell bent on destroying the public education system and making all education pay to play?
Fuck you Bobo, you've had a lucrative career playing apologist for the very sorts who are doing all the damage you now claim to be concerned about. You've been the kindler gentler mouthpiece for all the ugly, harmful policies that the GOP has pursued in order to cement a permanent oligarchy in this country for themselves and now that that damage has become impossible to ignore you're going to fall back on your patented "both sides do it" tripe? Fuck you…
Also too, you're an asshole friend as well. Instead of taking a few seconds to explain to your friend what those terms mean, you chose to shame her and condescend to her by going somewhere else to eat. I'm a fairly well read and educated person, but I'm not sure of the difference between “Padrino” and “Pomodoro” without Googling it. But unlike sociopaths like you, I'd just turn to one of my friends and take the thirty seconds to ask and they'd be happy to explain. That's how normal well adjusted human beings do it- nobody knows everything and there's no crime in not knowing something. For normal, not republican people, it would be a simple matter of someone teaching me something I didn't know. And later I'll likely get the opportunity to return the favor about something else. It's a win-win for those of us not class obsessed- learn something new and it'll never be an issue again. Unlike your bullshit response- only an asshole would humiliate their friend (assuming you actually have friends) rather than taking a moment to answer an easy and completely non controversial question about something utterly unimportant.
You want to have some real fun? Ask your snobby GOP friends (assuming you haven't already chased them all away) how to properly pronounce bruschetta and watch them all fail miserably…
This is why all Italians are in the upper class. . . .
Davvero!
I can't believe i didn't go with Upper Crust.
Currently hanging my head in shame.
Twitter was |not kind| to a man who thinks there's such a thing as a pomodoro (tomato) sandwich (panino).

David Brooks has a "friend" with only a high school diploma? As if.
"friend" = "nanny" = "undocumented alien"
= Thomas Friedman's cab driver
I think that guy is known as "one knowledgeable observer of the current scene."

I've never even seen an Italian deli, let alone eaten at one.
Good thing there's no furrin words on Mexican restaraunt menus.

That's why I always | order the #19 | because I can't pronounce 'picado.'
