  1. When I moved to Los Angeles in 1970 I rented a tiny little apartment on a hillside in Silver Lake…I think my rent was $85/mo. Anyway it had a view out over the basin but most days all you saw was the smog blanket. Of course it doesn't rain much in LA but when it did the view was like fairyland, just sparkly and magical.

    It would take about three days for 60's-era cars to crank out another dense smog blanket.

    No need to worry 47 years later, though, because government scientists are |on the case.|

    1. I was at the beach then. Sometimes we could see snowcapped Mt. Baldy and Big Bear to the east, and Catalina Island to the southwest. More often, it was just vomit-inducing brown.

      1. 1732 Webster Ave. My stipend as a teaching assistant at CalArts was $1500/year or so. Got drafted before the year was out anyway. Hilarity ensued.
