I saw one one night back in the late 80s-early 90s. It appeared low and slow, east to west, and I could hear it. I was in a state truck with a radio tied in to repeaters all over California. I was within 30 miles of the Nevada line, and I heard my colleagues all over the northern part of the state talking about it. It looked as if it just went over the next mountain range and crashed, but the folks at the coast near San Francisco thought it crashed into the ocean. They were probably correct, but probably way out in the ocean. Very cool event.
