  1. I used to live about a mile from that cemetery, and some other Jewish graveyards that are all through University City, which was once a heavily Jewish community, in no small part because of Washington University, which is half in UC and half in the city of St Louis.

    In the years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made housing discrimination illegal, |blockbusting| was so bad in U City that when I lived there it was still illegal for a real estate agent to knock on your door soliciting business.

    As a result, many whites left U City for suburbs farther west, but were unable to bring their dead along. In the late 80s/early 90s when I lived there, it was a delightful place, about evenly divided racially, with progressive government and an amazing city hall.
