          1. I am drawn to this one vendor who shows up twice a year with a cargo van loaded to the gills with musical instruments. I've bought a few from him. I was gonna buy a lap steel a couple of years ago, but by the time I had made up my mind on it, he had sold it to someone else.

  1. Guild and Fender got bought up by various interests. But I believe Martin is still an independent business, as is San Diego's own Taylor, whose 12-string I'm proud to have but never play.

Yep: "The company, founded in the U.S. has been continuously family owned and operated for six generations. Currently headed by Chairman and CEO Christian Frederick Martin IV, the company has been handed down five times since it was started by German immigrant Christian Frederick Martin Sr. in 1833."

  2. An old friend of mine retired and moved to Port Townsend WA in January. Called me in March wanting to come home. Next day a house across the street from me hit the market, and he bought it. Just got here, and his National got damaged (dented) in the move. He packed it himself, so the movers might not be liable. Bummer, that.

  3. These are fine, thank you. I've got a Martin DM Mahogany Dreadnaught so yours looked familiar, but mine has a spruce top and not-so-nice purfling as you're doing there. Your finish is beautiful—French polish?

  4. My DM is quite bare bones, no finish to speak of, but it's a solid guitar. I bought it thinking a nice(r) guitar would maybe inspire me to practice more. I was wrong.

  5. Looks like it got El Kabonged a little bit. Lower bout, left (top) side. Didn't change the playability, so there's that.

  6. When I retired I got serious about learning to do fingerstyle, got a book and nice Gibson Bluegrass Special. Worked at it daily for about a year and then decided to learn just three songs until I could play them perfectly.

    Hasn't happened yet.
