  1. So much to love about this story….

SOME OF WOUNDED REACH AMERICAN SIDE OF LINE
Rebel Forces Rush the Federals and for Hours Bullets Are Poured into Buildings at Close Range
Tijuana is in the hands of the rebels. The red flag of the revolutionist in Lower California floats from the mast of the Mexican custom house in the Mexican town, the result of by far the most desperate and sanguinary [=”bloody”] battle yet fought on the Mexican peninsula. The federal forces have been practically annihilated. It is conservatively estimated that the number of dead and wounded on the government side will total more than 100.
The rebel losses are not definitely known. Captain Sam Wood, the insurgent commander is dead and his negro orderly [Did he have a name? Not in those days] was also killed. Six rebel wounded were carried across the American line at Tia Juana for medical treatment.
Tia Juana [okay spell it however you like] is burning. Fires were started in several places at the same time this morning and throughout the day the columns of black smoke told the story of the campaign of destruction which is now under full swing.
The final attack upon the town began at 4:10 o’clock this morning and continued until 5:45 a.m. without cessation.
The rebels had crawled upon the place during the night, the federals thinking the enemy had retreated and not taking the precaution to put outposts on guard. [Oops!] Officers and soldiers alike, were worn out after the hard fighting of yesterday and last night and all were asleep on their arms.

With the coming of daylight the rebels opened fire from three sides and then like blood-thirsty savages [or a well-trained and disciplined infantry force] they started on their dash for the town, shooting and yelling as they ran. Their path was literally marked by streams of blood. The sleeping soldiers and officers were shot down without a chance [Señor, si no le importa voy a dispararle muerto, ¿está bien? and in the few instances were small detachments did succeed in getting their weapons and offering some resistance they were too much dazed to shoot with accuracy and the rebels had them completely at their mercy
