That picture looks fake, but I don't think it is. Cannot imagine what it must've been like to be in the midst of it the greatest naval battle in history, and the last there'll ever be at that scale. Japanese lost 4 aircraft carriers and a cruiser; we "only" lost 1 and a destroyer.
My friends who were in the Army in WW II say the European theater was worse because the fighting was continuous, once it finally started. Whereas soldiers and Marines in the Pacific spent a lot of time on ships between attacks on islands, each of which was more horrible than the last. The Naked and the Dead is thought to be a good depiction of the experience.
I don't know much about my father's service, but he bounced around from 1943 to 1955 in the Regular Army, Army Air Corps, Navy and Military Sea Transport Service. Philippines, Guam, Aleutians, and Korea.
On 13 September 2000, Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt designated the lands and waters of Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge as the Battle of Midway National Memorial.

Decoding Japanese common was a big part of the success in the Battle of Midway.
