Probably depends what kind of STEM. I know areas that are not so good, I know people with good STEM careers, I also know some miserable struggling PhDs in the sciences.
My major worry with a career in finance would be dying of boredom. That article you link is 3 years old, but I bet there's some truth to it. What are the STEM fields that are doing well? It's probably a lot more granular than just "STEM"

If the kid is good with numbers and you want them to actually be able to support themselves (let alone "be successful"), push 'em towards finance.
