Photoshop seems the most likely thing. I grew up knowing older people who had 19th century sensibilities about death. They showed photos from funerals and commented on the funeral home's work. So I wouldn't be surprised at the sadder alternative, either.

It's downright sick how much stock the South puts in death, the dead, and the past. They could have called the Confederacy "Greater Wallachia."
