I planned to pop in to this on my way home and left work acceptably early, but for fog and traffic reasons I was 15 minutes late.
Parking lot was *packed* and the entrance to CC was blanketed on either side with those awful yellow and black HARRIS lawn signs. I thought So this is how it's going to be – full of local Teabagging cranks, but no. Several local Resistance Orgs had gotten a huge number of people together – some folks were bused down from Harford County, 2 hours away and yes in the 1st district. Standing room only inside, a mob of protesters (and a few oldsters with stupid red MAGA trucker hats) milling about outside and some very surly College, Local and State Police guarding the door enforcing the Fire Marshall Rules.
I had to stay outside with the Agitators (who – cleverly – wrote their ZIP code numbers on the back of their signs to prove they were District dwellers), but as everyone's phones were broadcasting the CNN livestream I got to hear. And Boo. With the rest of everyone. Audible yells and boos coming from inside the building as well as all the CNN feeds. Tough crowd.
Written questions were submitted by the audience and read aloud, to prevent the derailing screamfests featured at the other town halls. I think it worked pretty well, almost all of the questions were pointed, some downright brutal. No softballs. I have to give Andy Harris credit – he handled the raucous crowd very well, got to explain himself and didn't totally lose control of the situation. The deal with Andy is, he's just as extreme as any of the Freedom Caucaisans, but he speaks well and calmly and makes it all sound so reasonable.
Crowd wasn't buying it. Not most of them. Huge group of protesters right in front of the exit doors afterward chanting "Hey hey, ho, ho, Andy Harris's got to go!" The "Talbot Rising" group had a PA and open stage right out front with people telling their ACA/healthcare stories. Some powerful testimony.
Quite a lot of young people there , obviously terrified and mobilized by the Trump regime, mixing in nicely with the old activists. Lots of women standing up for their rights. One Pussy Hat. One coathanger motif sign. One GOP OMG WTF shirt – my current favorite.
I have phone photos but they mostly suck – it was too grey and dark.
I saw those last year, nothing says "we really don't give a fuck" like last election cycle's signs. I'm pretty sure they all just said "HARRIS", no year, though I hate to even look at them.
Funny thing was, the Republicans went all out to show support fri this guy and they still got overwhelmed by a huge wave of angry protestors. They had to know it was coming, but there was no real organized counter demonstration.
They're free stickers I give out with the Cthulhu Chick Tracts and they're wildly popular. I got quite a few new names for the Eaten First mailing list, I can tell you.
