  1. Win 10 caused an orgy of fiddling followed by a data holocaust around here. But hey: Cortana!

Anyway, Windows Server 2012r2 is the preferred platforrm for music servers because you can write (or find) scripts to kill all the unnecessary "services."

    1. Yeah, the fiddling part is what is making me wish Microsoft would just leave things alone and tweak as needed. Plus, everything I'm reading indicates that in Win10 you really don't gain much, you lose the ability to choose updates, you lose Windows Media Player (which I need for transferring video/music to my Kindle), and I read somewhere that you can't play back DVDs. What?!? Maybe some of this info is wrong or will be addressed with updates, but I'm not holding my breath.

      1. You use WMP to transfer to your Kindle Fire? I just use a file manager, or Media Monkey (but then, I still run 7, so maybe that also is not easy in 10).

        1. Actually, I probably misspoke on that. Oopsie. I'm on Win7 too, and I just drag and drop whatever I want to the Kindle once it's recognized by the computer. I think I got the idea that you needed WMP to transfer video to Kindle because the only formats supported on the Kindle are MP4 and VP8, and I open MP4s with WMP .

Also, from what I'm reading, Microsoft will have a downloadable DVD player available for Win10. Wheeee.

Anyway, I won't be making the switch until things start really going to hell using Win 7.

          1. I sideloaded VLC onto my Fire, which lets you play just about any format. It's awesome (I also have 2G Fire, so I can plug it right into the tv, if necessary). Yeah, I mostly drag and drop, but I do believe Media Monkey will recognize it as a drive, which can be useful. Honestly, I mostly use my Chromebook for day-to-day, and my PC is only for running Calibre, Media Monkey, the occasional conversion on Handbrake, and any time I need to do a disk repair on a USB.

  2. Windows 7. I hate those tiles/charms things whatever the hell they are. Yuck. Plus, I don't have a touchscreen. Fuck 8 and 10. I actually removed the update that put that stupid nag 'upgrade to 10' icon in the taskbar so I don't have to look at it anymore.

    1. They axed the "charms" in 10 and brought back the Start button. So if you wind up forced to use it, there won't be much familiarization required. And you may be forced to use it when they stop support (i.e. fixing security leaks) in 7.

  3. Ubuntu is really good for keeping old computers running reasonably quickly because it's not loaded up with drivers and sevices for every device ever invented. Last time I used it, though, it had no equivalent to the Office version of Outlook, and that was a nuisance.

  4. Actually, that's where the large-fortune part of my computer stash comes into play – my desktop has a 1.8 T OS, with 12GB expandable installed RAM, and the laptop is a high-end Alienware model, so neither of them ever get bogged down, and I don't worry much about running out of room to stash updates. Computers are the one thing I'll spend major bucks on to get what I want.

Still, I will definitely look further into Ubuntu, just as a backup if nothing else. If I love it I may be able to get away from Windows altogether.
