Supposed to be nasty weather in Iowa later tonight, blizzard conditions, etc. It might hit western Iowa around the time the caucuses end. Hopefully, it won't deter anyone from going and letting their voices be heard.
If I may paraphrase Joseph N. Welch during the McCarthy hearings: "Have you no sense of decency, Karen? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"
Mr. Rose, whose wife, Mary Jones, was a precinct captain for President Obama in 2008, ruefully recalled losing out on some supporters because a rival campaign had brought homemade sandwiches.
hahaha the NYT is coming in with the important facts.
edit: it doesn't end.
Ms. Vernon said she was already wary of her rivals’ tactics. “I heard some Hillary people talking about if they should bring pizza,” Ms. Vernon said, with a hint of suspicion in her voice. She paused. “I wouldn’t mind getting a piece of pizza, but I’m probably going to go for Bernie.”
The top story on MSNBC's Chris Hayes website at the moment is one I saw the other night, and becomes pretty hilarious and touching when their dude on the ground in Iowa ventures into the home of a nice old couple, looks at all the mailers they've received, and sits down with them in their living room to have dinner on teevee tables while they watch all the freaking commercials.
Just remember, two folks who won the Iowa caucus on the Republican side recently were "President" Rick Santorum and "President" Mike Huckabee, so, yeah. Republican Iowegians are not very good at selecting presidents, so there's that.
"Have you seen that delegate? I mean, I haven't, but my people tell me he or she is YOOGE and BEEYOOTIFUL! You've never seen such a classy delegate. And my people tell me he or she loves me and thinks I'm awesome, which is great."
Ioway allows for same-day voter registration, at least on caucus night (not sure about the general, but probably then, too). So, if a person is a first-time voter (or has recently moved and just needs to update their address info) they can register right at the caucus. What's frustrating and ridiculous is that some places either underestimate or just have no estimate at all as to how many forms will be needed at any particular caucus place. Most likely, the people who need voter reg forms will get them eventually. They may have to delay the actual caucus process for a little while, but they should (I hope) still be able to get registered and caucus.
Clinton leading early entrance poll among… white people, which is 94% of the electorate according to CNN. If that's accurate this will be a good night for her.

So… a bit windy out in those parts?
Very. And cold. A tree fell over in a park near here. That rarely happens. And pretty heavy rain Sunday morning. It's weird, having weather.
I saw a scary tree fall on the news, and a 115 mph gust somewhere. That's all too much. People move out there to get away from the weather, I understand, and maybe a few strongly worded letters to the Chamber of Commerce are in order.
Nobody's hair got messed up so it's OK.
That's a bit of luck!
Wow, now that's a scary tree fall! I hope no one was hurt.
I think my previous comment came off much more smartass-y than It should have, so I do apologize.
I'm surrounded by gigantic old silver maples. If they ever go their roots will take the entire neighborhood with them. The good news – no grass to mow!
Not sure which comment you mean. I didn't detect any smart assery.
It was indeed a pretty dramatic tree fail. Around California it's more common for |oaks to drop their limbs in the summer,| and oaks are ubiquitous. So parks and public spaces are careful to place tables and benches away from oak canopies.
Oh, good. The whole "strongly worded letter" to the C-o-C bit was making me uneasy…
Wow, "Sudden Limb Drop" is a real thing! Didn't know that. A tree (don't remember what kind) did that to me years ago. Late summer, dead calm, tree just ups and sheds a huge limb *right across the top of the power pole* outside my window. Woke up to a huge electrical ball of fire outside the window (try integrating that into your dream "hmmm…the sun is making this weird buzzing sound…"). Fortunately, the power cut before everything caught fire.
Must have been the temperature drop that night. Now I know, cool.
D-55% reporting
Clinton 51.2% (341)

It's State Delegate Equivalents, the guess that the Iowa Democratic Party has of how many delegates each will have at the state convention level in March.
So you have a fraction of a fraction of the voters, and the voters then elect delegates, basically. So the most you can expect from the Ds is to hit the 2008 caucus high turnout of 38% of eligible D voters. (And since Iowa lets you switch sides that day, people who were Ds could switch to R tonight just for shits and giggles and free Trump swag, then never vote R again.)
Going back to Florida for a change of clothes? Nonsense. He's obviously got to go plug in his brain at the home charging station, or perform some bizarre rite at the secret home altar to keep his human form, or finalize his report to the Overlords, or finish loading the fuel rods in his personal nuclear submarine.
From the NYT's updates, finally an answer to the question I've had for an hour:
The Democratic race is very close, but Clinton has had a slight edge the entire night. And the outstanding counties aren't necessarily any better for Sanders or Clinton.
I was linked an anonymously-posted video of someone asking an election official in a Polk County caucus whether there should be a recount or not. That was pretty weak.
The next few months are going to be insufferable. I also saw a Bernie fan on twitter claiming that his supporters are soooo well-mannered when he speaks (after they had been screaming, "LIAR" at Hillary when she spoke). Love Bernie, but hate about 75% of his voters at this point.
I feel the same. Bernie's awesome, I like Hillary a bit more but I'd have no problems voting for Bernie in a general election. It's just that he has so many supporters that are awful.
It's like having a crush on someone and finding out they only hang out with lacrosse douches. But, yes, same. And it's like Clinton 2008 redux — if Bernie doesn't quash the BS soon, it's going to sink him.
Apparently the Polk County Democratic Party chairman is sending someone to knock on the door of the head of the precinct not showing results yet. We're at that point.
And with that I'm going to bed. Nearly 3am and it may take hours for them to get contact with the final ten precincts. Legendary night to say the least.
Latest numbers: Cruz 28% (Yay!*) Trump 24, Rubio 23. Other people got votes as well. (It appears Jeb! finished with 3%. *snort*)
Clinton: 49.9%, Bernie 49.5%. A few people voted for M O'M also, too. Teh teevee newz is saying it's the closest Iowa caucus race evah.
* I said "Yay!" about Cruz's win because I feel like, among the GOP front runners, he would be the easiest to defeat in November. Trump scares me as human being and as a candidate because he could get a lot of independents to vote for him. Rubio scares me as a human being and as a candidate because he's smooth and I could see a lot of people voting for him. Cruz is just creepy as all fuck.
Also, too, O'Malley is suspending his campaign, as is Fuckadump, er, sorry, Huckabee.
I'm in San Diego and the nearest selling dealer is about 110 miles away in Tustin. The nearest filling station is about 10 miles away which would be fine. New techmology vs iron-clad Toyota reliability. My 2011 Prius has 35k miles on it and shows every sign of running forever. What to do?
I believe it works like a reality show and all the candidates that dropout will be sequestered at an all-inclusive island resort until the reunion show conventions (or possibly elections).
Iowa caucuses don't start until 7PM local time (8 eastern, 5 pacific) but might as well get the thread up now.
So they start at 7 PM, last maybe two hours, then have to deliver the results to Demo and GOPer HQ, where the numbers will be counted…what time will it be before we see the twin-triumphs of Bernie and Gary Gilmore?

Has anyone explained to him that coming in 3rd is not winning? Fucking youths and their participation trophies.
He made the playoffs though!
As we learned from Ray Gillette, a bronze medal isn't losing!
Oh God, how long is Rubio going to babble on? Get to the Trump
temper tantrumconcession speech already…89% in
Clinton 49.9% (620)
Sanders 49.4% (614)
O'Malley 0.6% (7)
Uncommitted 0.1% (1)
Marco will be back to Iowa in October 2017. I'm sure he'll enjoy travelling as a private citizen.
MARCO!
Boobio!
POLO!
MSNBC: Trump is on his way!
Here comes The Donald!
Clinton 49.8% (628)
Sanders 49.6% (625)
CAN'T STUMP THE TRUMP
"We finished second, and I'm honored" = "Fuck, I can't believe this happened to me!"
The Donald: I lost, but Hillary has problems!
MSNBC: HRC says she's winning because of the superdelegates.
In that context she actually has a point.
Oh Christ, MSNBC says we could be going "into the wee hours" for the Democratic results. Fuck it–time to walk the dogs. BBL…
92% reporting
Clinton 50.2% (660)
Sanders 49.3% (649)
Came back to hear Cruz' victory speech. Off to the liquor store I go!
One really should never listen to Ted Cruz with a BAC below .08.
NYT delegate estimate: Clinton 21, Sanders 21.
Tonight, we are all Martin O'Malley, or at least tied with him in the Iowa caucuses.
I'm being ranted at by someone claiming voter fraud by Hillary Clinton already, help
Ask for evidence. Laugh when that person says "everyone knows she did it!" and remind him or her that "everyone" thought Iraq had WMD's back in 2003…
I was linked an anonymously-posted video of someone asking an election official in a Polk County caucus whether there should be a recount or not.
MSNBC: we won't know the final tally tonight.
Well, fuck. Good night, everyone!
Night!
They're not yet counting the Illinois votes and precincts from the moon. (Moon, Iowa.)
Clinton winning by half an O'Malley.
Tbh though it's basically a tie, and no matter what the differences are we can all agree to point and laugh at Donald Trump.
|a vagina just esploded in my ear!|
…and with that, I bid you all g'night.
Night to you too!
Wait, I just woke up to check on the results!

I'm still here for a bit! Incredibly close right now.
Oooh this is close….
Clinton up 3 with 14 precincts remaining. 7 are in counties Sanders is leading, 7 where Clinton is leading.
Hands up who thought Martin O'Malley wouldn't make any impact (with his teeny tiny 0.5% of the vote) this election?
All of us, Katie
Complaining about media bias when the media has been paying a ton of attention to your state for the last month? Not very good timing.
What to do?
I believe it works like a reality show and all the candidates that dropout will be sequestered at an all-inclusive island resort until the
reunion showconventions (or possibly elections).More like a turd party! *snort!*
Who ya gonna call? Glass Pusher!
Yep, we're talking off-line. Dude knows his stuff.
