France’s top court suspends burqini ban. In other news, it is so flippin’ hot here that my hair has caught on fire and there is no AC to be found.

  1. I figured they'd back off. That photo was terrible press.

That outfit really reminds me of a Fremen Stillsuit. Probably much hotter.

Well,, after several spectacularly comfortable late summer days in a row, we're back to this:

    1229 EDT
    Outside Temp 90.5 F
    Outside Humidity 62%
    Heat Index 103.0 F
    Wind Chill 91.0 F
    Dew Point 76.0 F
    Barometer 1017.1mb
    Bar Trend Steady
    Wind Speed 2 Mph
    Wind Direction NE 55°
12 Hour Forecast Increasing clouds with little temperature change. Precipitation possible within 24 to 48 hours.

    Yay.

    1. I'm happy for the ladies that get to wear what makes them comfortable, but for me the comfort of letting it all hang out wins over the modest notion of covering every inch of my body. We've been flirting with 100F all week, but juuusssst not quite there. Thankfully, the canicule breaks this weekend and we go back to mid 80's next week and I think mid-70s by week's end. I normally don't mind living in somewhat "rustic" conditions, without the modern office cubicles and accompanying AC, but it really missed it this week.

Enjoy the rain. We need some here too. I've managed to just barely keep my tomatoes and peppers alive.

      1. Yeah, I think folks should be able to wear whatever they want, or nothing at all, it don't hurt no one. I heard a reporter on NPR this morning who say two nuns, in full Nun Regalia riding bike down the street in full view of everyone. The secular apparel laws don't seem to apply to everyone.

I put in central HVAC, ditched the window AC's and haven't looked back. I'd ditch that too, if I lived in a less humid, more moderate place like Cape Breton, but it's necessary here.

          1. We're on a river, so no basement*, but the house is 16th century with thick stone walls, which really does help with the cooling, particularly on the lower floors. But my office is in the attic, and like an idiot, I spend most of the day there.

            * There is a rumor that a basement once did exist, and it went under the river in a secret passage that connected to the chateau. There is also a rumor that a mistress of the duke lived in this place. Intrigue!

          2. I do have a giant collection of rubber bands from years of salvaging them from mail, produce, etc. Your solution seems a better use than that giant ball I was contemplating fabricating.

          3. I bought a cheap 2 1/2 acre parcel in the desert with all kinds of alternative ideas in mind. I ended up building an 8'X8' log shack and a 2-story outhouse on it instead, and parked a travel trailer out there. Damn tweekers have just about torn it all down to the ground.

  2. Didja know that San Diego, in addition to being America's finest city (it used to say so on the city website!) is also America's greenest city? If you don't believe me you can go to page 210 of libertarian-leaning economist Edward Glaeser's book Triumph of the City and read that "the five greenest metropolitan areas in the country are San Deigo, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Jose and Sacramento." This is based on carbon emissions per home; the five brownest are Houston, Birmingham, Nashville, Memphis and Oklahoma City.

C'mon down! The air quality isn't as bad as you'd think!

  3. "Live at the Cellar Door" and "Live at Massey Hall" are two terrific recordings for those of us who like Neil in his "After the Gold Rush" period.

Also too, Netflix has a Jonathan Demme concert movie called "Heart of Gold" that's pretty good.

And also three, the Shedd Aquarium used to be in Chicago, but did they merge w/Sea World?

  4. Looks like fun. I see they do parties: wouldn't it be great to sign them for a corporate gig and have them do "My Last Trip to Tulsa" and "Down By the River" for a nice corporate crowd?
