  1. Not so much silence as the sounds of nature. Freshly fallen snow makes a great sound absorber, many of my winter hikes up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire were deliciously, subtly quiet.

      1. I've got a bit of permanent ringing in my ears from not using hearing protection (stupid!) using a circular saw making a couple of telescopes before a trip to Turkey 10 years ago to see a total eclipse. Most of the time I don't notice it, and when things are really quiet it isn't enough to bother me.

        1. I stood in front of the Wall of Sound, lots of gunfire, and construction–from hand tools to heavy equipment. I didn't stand a chance.

          1. A couple of of my 3 nephews in their early 20s in the armed forces already have permanent hearing damage. Thanks, Obama!

          2. I'm sorry to hear that.

The single most memorable event in my inevitable and continuing journey to deafness was at a Georgia Satellites concert. I was hanging out way in the back when the opening note sounded and I made an immediate beeline for the door, but it was too late. That was in the 80's, so reagan's fault.

  2. Interestingly enough, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota, which is apparently so secret that Google Maps doesn't delineate its boundaries, has been an FAA Restricted Area since 1948. Thanks, HST! My grandparents had a cabin at the edge of it and we'd go up there every summer. Very quiet, except for these guys:

      1. Never had to mess with those. Thankfully, nuclear densometers are pretty quiet, and that's as close to that as I've been. Also core drills.

  3. Nice. Of course, when you get up above timberline in the Whites in the winter, the wind is often strong enough to make the flapping of your jacket hood against your head sound like a machine gun…
